Gulfport Mayor on Tax Credits and Housing:
The mayor of Gulfport says there are too many available homes in the city. Now he's calling for Governor Haley Barbour to help. Wednesday, Mayor George Schloegel wrote a letter to the governor detailing Gulfport's housing dilemma. The mayor says with at least 2,300 homes on the market and even more rental units available, the city needs to re-think tax credit developments.

Hurricane Katrina: Has Mississippi Fallen Further Behind?
At the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the harmful consequences of Mississippiʼs misplaced priorities have become clear, and perhaps irreversible. The State has reduced its allocation for housing programs, lowered its forecasts for key affordable housing programs and abandoned plans for a full housing recovery.

As the Mississippi Gulf Coast continues its recovery from Hurricane Katrina, the pace of construction has grown while the need for temporary housing subsided, according to "Katrina: Four Years After," an annual progress report released by Governor Haley Barbour today.

Financial Crisis Cripples New Affordable Housing
For thousands of low-income renters nationwide - but especially in rural towns and small cities - the recession is hitting home in an unexpected way. Nationwide, funding to build low-cost apartments has dropped by more than half in two years to $4 billion. Hundreds of projects can't get off the ground because the federal tax credits that help offset development costs are currently worthless to traditional investors.

Second Street Residents Still Don’t Want Cottages:
Residents of the 2nd Street community learned more Monday night about a proposed housing development. Gulfport School leaders and consultants met with people to discuss possibilities for the old East Ward Elementary School property. The superintendent hoped to dispel rumors by giving 2nd Street residents first-hand information about the district's plans for the old East Ward site. The plans include eco-friendly cottages, something many residents still don't like.

Gautier Council Rejects Proposed Cottage Development
A 43-unit Mississippi Cottage development on the south side of U.S. 90 and west of Beasley Road was rejected on a 5-2 vote by the Gautier City Council during its Tuesday meeting. A public hearing drew citizens who spoke against the project, which would have included businesses fronting U.S. 90 and one- and two-bedroom cottages south to Old Spanish Trail on about five acres.

New Development Gets Green Light:
The two year battle between a Texas developer and one South Mississippi city is over. After Tuesday's 4-3 council vote, Realtex Development Corporation will be allowed to build another affordable housing community in the city of Gulfport.

Mississippians from the coast to the delta and beyond converged on the capital Tuesday begging for affordable housing. A public hearing was held in the senate housing committee on the Mississippi Affordable Housing Trust Fund Bill. Room 210 in the capitol was packed for the senate housing committee hearing.
