  • More than 90,000 housing units in Mississippi suffered major damage or were destroyed by Katrina
  • 22,675 people in Mississippi still receive housing assistance
  • 6,844 FEMA trailers are still in operation in Mississippi and 1/3 of FEMA trailer occupants are elderly and/or disabled
  • 472 households are living in hotels and motels awaiting permanent housing
  • 912 households are receiving FEMA rental assistance
  • 53% of recipients of FEMA direct housing assistance were homeowners pre-Katrina
  • 1% of recipients of FEMA direct housing assistance had ever previously received housing assistance
  • 165 units (2%) of a total of 5,624 units awarded tax credits in the lower three counties have been built and occupied since Katrina
  • 9 developments awarded tax credits have been denied permits, preventing the construction of over 850 units of affordable rental housing
  • Wages have remained stable while the median sales price of single-family homes has risen 40% from pre-Katrina prices
  • Homeowner insurance rates have increased 91% since Katrina

Mississippi 4 Years Later

  • More than 90,000 housing units in Mississippi suffered major damage or were destroyed by Katrina
  • 5,908 people in Mississippi still receive disaster housing assistance
  • 529 FEMA trailers are still in operation in Mississippi
  • 58% of recipients of FEMA direct housing assistance were homeowners pre-Katrina; less than 3/4 of those families have been able to rebuild their homes
  • Less than 1% of recipients of FEMA direct housing assistance had ever previously received public housing assistance
  • 1142 units (22%) of a total of 5,261 units awarded tax credits in the lower six counties have completed construction since Katrina
  • The State’s Long Term Workforce Housing Program is projected to produce 4,831 new or rehabilitated affordable housing units
  • Mississippi's Small Rental Assistance Program forecast the production of 6,500 affordable units; 1,800 units have been approved to date
  • MS recently requested and received an additional 5,000 housing vouchers to meet unmet housing affordability needs
